Definition

Biodiversity is the variety of all living organisms, including variability within and between species and across ecosystems. Biodiversity loss threatens planetary health in various ways. For example, biodiversity is important for ecosystem services such as pollination and traditional medicine, for the food we eat, and for infectious disease control. Biodiversity loss is accelerating, driven by human activities such as deforestation, with increasing numbers of species endangered or going extinct.
