Definition
The clearance and destruction of natural trees and forests by humans so the land can be used for something else. Deforestation removes trees, an important carbon sink, releases carbon emissions, causes biodiversity loss (particularly for tropical rainforests), exposes soil increasing soil erosion and desertification, and reduces ecosystem services. Agriculture and urbanisation are important drivers of deforestation.
