Definition

When disease-causing micro-organisms (including bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites) no longer respond to their antimicrobial treatment (antibiotics, antivirals, antifungals, antiparasitics respectively). This means common infections cannot be treated and infections cannot easily be prevented (such as during surgical operations and when treating cancer). AMR can occur naturally but is driven by inappropriate use of antimicrobials in both humans and animals (including in agriculture). Climate change increases risks of AMR, for example by increasing the spread of vector-borne disease and malnutrition weakening immune systems.
