Definition

The manipulation of an organism’s genetic material by humans. Genetic engineering may be used to increase food productivity and resilience to a changing climate. Although genetic engineering may be used to generate disease resistance, if a population of organisms is more uniform and there is less genetic diversity, the population may be more vulnerable to certain diseases. Control methods for climate-sensitive vectors such as mosquitoes includes genetic modification.
